Exciting news! We’re happy to share that the upcoming release of ThinLinc is just around the corner, and it’s packed with more than 110 enhancements and fixes to elevate your experience. 🚀
We’re thrilled to invite you to be part of our beta testing phase. Your feedback is invaluable, so please take this pre-release version for a spin. Here’s a sneak peek at some standout improvements:
- The load balancer has been replaced and is now based on the principle
of keeping the same number of users on each agent. This will provide a
more robust and consistent behavior, and should be more predictable.
The system can also be configured to intentionally spread users
unevenly, if some agents have more resources than others.
- ThinLinc now supports the back and forward buttons commonly found on
modern computer mice. Note that both the client and server must be
upgraded for this new feature to work.
- The system requirements for ThinLinc have been increased, and
distributions that are out of general support will not be able to use
ThinLinc. Affected systems are Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7,
Ubuntu 18.04, Debian 9, and SUSE Linux Enterprise 12. Users are
encouraged to upgrade to more current versions of their distributions.
- Free usage of ThinLinc for up to 10 concurrent users will now require
downloading a separate license file. Without the license file
installed, only 3 concurrent users are allowed. As before, the full
product functionality is provided for these users.

I’m interested in the process for acquiring the license for up to 10 users. Does the request require something specific to each host it’s installed on?

Hi @crompton,
As we are currently in the process of launching a self-service portal, both for our free users and our paying customers, the licenses will eventually be downloadable from there. As it currently stands, we still have some work left to provide a streamlined way for our free users to access these through the portal.
Until we’ve bolted all of that together, our community license file is available for download here: [https://portal.thinlinc.com/community.license](https://portal.thinlinc.com/community.license). To install it, simply save the file and copy it to `/opt/thinlinc/etc/licenses/` on your ThinLinc server (or ThinLinc master node if you want to try it out on a clustered ThinLinc setup). For the licenses to be detected right away, restart the master service: `sudo systemctl restart vsmserver`.
When the stable release drops, the procedure of downloading the community licenses will be clearly communicated as part of the regular download flow.
