We have a working thinlinc server that is out of date. We opted to build from scratch instead of upgrading the existing server.

Musescore appimage works as expected on the old server.
Musescore audio does not work on the new server. (Other audio works fine)

Here is the console output on the new server when I run musescore from a terminal.

That makes it look like a permissions issue. So here is this:

alvin@thinlinc:~$ ls -l /dev/snd/seq
crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 1 Jul 27 22:37 /dev/snd/seq
alvin@thinlinc:~$ groups alvin
alvin : alvin adm cdrom sudo audio dip plugdev users lpadmin sambashare
alvin@thinlinc:~$

Another observation is that when musescore it trying to play, it is playing about 1/3 speed. (in the gui)
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi @Joyous8614,

Sound can be a bit tricky with image container formats in a remote session. Would installing Musecore from a repository instead be an option for you? This is probably the simplest way forward; it looks like Musecore provides this option. If you try it out, let us know if it solves the issue for you.

I found something that works but I’m not sure if this what I should do since I don’t understand the possible side-effects.

alvin@thinlinc:~$ sudo apt install pulseaudio
[sudo] password for alvin:

@aaron The musescore version in the mint repos is very very out of date. I don’t know how to unpack appimages (and I doubt that it would help).

What I found so far.
Musescore tries to use pipewire but that fails because there is no physical hardware. Next it falls back to alsa which also fails because there is no physical hardware.
When pulseaudio is installed, musescore’s alsa profile inexplicably (by me) starts working.

@Joyous8614 great to hear you found a solution. There is a PipeWire → PulseAudio “bridge” available, normally called pipewire-pulse or similar in the repositories. This might possibly be an alternative to completely replacing PipeWire on your system. Either way, glad it’s working for you!
